Our Asclepias Seeds. Asclepias tuberosa and its perennial or annual cousins can also be sown. In borders or flowering meadows, these varieties offer a light, colourful flowering, and are highly visited by pollinators such as butterflies and bees.
Asclepias tuberosa, or butterfly weed, is a perennial for dry soil with orange umbels that flower all summer in the sun. Asclepias incarnata 'Rose' prefers a cooler soil; its large, soft pink umbels, borne on tall stems, find their place near a water point or in a border. More exotic, Asclepias curassavica 'Red Butterfly', which is not very hardy, is grown as an annual in the ground or in pots; it offers very decorative red and yellow flowers.
Related to Asclepias, Tweedia (Oxypetalum) 'Heavenly Blue' is a plant with sky-blue star-shaped flowers, interesting in pots or for cut flower arrangements. Also discover Gomphocarpus fruticosus 'Cottonbush' and its decorative, swollen green fruits, used in fresh or dried bouquets.
These milkweeds appreciate full sun, a warm situation, a light soil without excess winter moisture, with hardiness varying according to the species.
Sow them under cover in spring in a fine, well-drained substrate, then transplant them into position after the frosts. At the end of the season, clear away the dry stems, mulch the less hardy stumps and leave a few fruits to encourage self-sowing.
