Our selection of Magnolias with excellent hardiness suitable for very cold regions. These are trees or deciduous bushes whose late flowering escapes spring frosts. These magnolias reach 2 to 8 m in height depending on the cultivar, they flower between April and May for spring varieties, and later for summer species. In the garden, you can enjoy their spectacular and often fragrant flowering.

The famous Magnolia ‘Susan’ flowers in April-May: its dark purple buds open into violet-pink goblets, its habit is bushy, it measures 2.50 to 3.50 m tall; it is a very reliable variety. 'Betty’ is a small tree 3–4 m tall which offers large magenta-pink goblets, its flowering can extend into summer. The Magnolia loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’, derived from M. kobus, is one of the most cold-resistant (down to -25/-30 °C): its pale pink star-shaped flowers bloom in April on a small tree 4 to 6 m tall, well-suited to continental climates. 'Galaxy’, with its slender habit (6–8 m) is covered in large carmine-pink flowers in May; its slightly later flowering escapes the frosts.

These trees and bushes appreciate a cool to temperate climate, an exposure to non-scorching sun and a humus-bearing, deep, acid to neutral, fresh, but well-drained soil. Plant without injuring the roots, mulch and water for the first two years, avoid severe pruning. In chalky soil, watch for chlorosis and then correct with a suitable amendment.
