Our range of variegated elder bushes. These deciduous bushes have few equals for brightening up hedges and large borders with their cream or yellow marginate leaf, their melliferous white flowering and their black berries which are useful for wildlife. They grow between 2 and 4 metres tall and should be planted in the garden in a position with non-scorching sun.

The benchmark of the group is Sambucus nigra ‘Madonna’, with green leaves broadly edged in cream, very bright, with large white umbels in May-June. S. nigra ‘Luteovariegata’ displays a yellow to creamy-yellow variegation, perfect for warming up a partially shaded border. More surprising, S. nigra ‘Pulverulenta’ presents a green and white speckled leaf, very decorative near a pathway; it appreciates a cool, well-drained soil. S. nigra ‘Marion Bull’ is distinguished by a well-contrasted cream variegation and pinkish flowering.

Elders thrive in ordinary to rich, deep soils that remain somewhat cool. Choose a position in gentle sun or partial shade. Watch for the appearance of all-green leaves (reversion to type) and remove the affected stems to preserve the variegation.
Plant them in autumn or spring in a hole enriched with compost.
Water regularly for the first two summers, then only in case of drought.
