Our range of winter-flowering Magnolias, to enjoy flowers in late winter and very early spring. These magnolias are deciduous, often fragrant, and flower between January and March depending on the climate.
The best known is the Magnolia stellata ‘Royal Star’, with its numerous double white star-shaped flowers. The Magnolia × loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ offers lilac-pink starry flowers that tolerate frost better than many other magnolias. In the same group, Magnolia loebneri ‘Merrill’ offers a profusion of very early cream-white stars, visible from afar. Magnolia campbellii and M. denudata produce some of the earliest flowering; they are the parents of cultivars like 'Star Wars' which flower at the very beginning of spring. Not forgetting the michelia hybrids. Notably the Magnolia (Michelia) ‘Fairy Blush’ which flowers from February, then again in June and August-September.

Plant magnolias in a humus-bearing, rich, cool but well-drained, neutral to acid soil, in gentle sun and sheltered from cold winds. Water regularly in the first year, mulch the base and avoid working the soil around the shallow roots.
